Petworking vs. Square

Payments are one part of running a pet business.

Square is a strong payments and point-of-sale company. Petworking is the pet-industry operating layer around payment processing: bookings, pet records, memberships, storefront, inventory, referrals and order-ahead pickup. Processing is a named rate; marketplace commission is separate and applies only to transactions Petworking generates.

One platform. More of the pet world.

One animal, one lifeSquare takes the payment at every one of these stops. It does not run the work happening at them.

Scope, not quality. A short bar is a product that chose a lane and is probably excellent in it. We are arguing that the animal does not live in one lane.

Checked against Square’s own public product pages, help centre and pricing documentation on 15 September 2026. A tick means they publish it, a tilde means they publish something close with a caveat we have stated, and a dash means we found nothing. Vendors change fast: send us anything we have got wrong and we will fix it and say so.

Square is a card reader and a point of sale. There is no like-for-like cost comparison to run, because Square does not sell scheduling, client records or booking. What it does sell, it sells well.

This is a scope comparison rather than a like-for-like cost table. Square has payments, point of sale and booking tools; the question here is the pet-specific record and the network around that work.

We are not trying to out-payment a payments company.

We are trying to be the layer a pet business actually works in all day: POS and payments, plus booking, pet-specific operations, marketplace discovery and the Pet Passport. Payment processing is its own named line. Direct transactions carry no marketplace commission.

Your business should not have to figure out the platform alone.

Pet care is bigger than dogs and cats.

12.6 million Canadian pets are not dogs or cats. Petworking is being built for the whole pet world.

One platform should not require every animal outside the two largest categories to become “Other.”

Canada had approximately 29.76 million pets in 2024, of which roughly 12.58 million were neither dogs nor cats. Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada, Pet food trends in Canada, 2025. Data year 2024.
