Animals are not CRM records

By Raymond Chizanga ·

A database has to call the animal something.

Record.

Object.

Entity.

Profile.

Fine.

Engineers need words.

The problem starts when the product begins thinking about the animal the same way the database does.

The animal is not an administrative inconvenience

They are the reason the entire industry exists.

Nobody opened a grooming salon because they were passionate about calendars.

Nobody became a veterinarian because they love invoice generation.

Nobody started a rescue because CRM automation was calling their name.

The technology exists to support relationships between humans and animals.

That should be visible in how the software works.

Software shapes behaviour

If your system gives staff one tiny note field for behaviour, behaviour becomes a tiny note.

If the system has no useful way to carry historical care information forward, people stop carrying it forward.

If every new professional starts with a blank profile, everybody starts relearning the animal.

Software is not neutral.

It decides what information is easy to preserve and what information gets lost.

Pet care should feel lived in

Animals have routines.

Preferences.

Relationships.

Histories.

Places they like.

People they trust.

Things they hate.

Good days.

Bad days.

Health changes.

Habits.

We should be able to build serious operational systems without stripping all of that life out of them.

That is really the larger Petworking thesis.

Pet technology does not need to feel like a spreadsheet somebody decorated with paw prints.

The animal world is alive.

The software serving it should remember that.
