How to keep your pet’s vaccination records on your phone

By Raymond Chizanga ·

The easiest way to keep your pet’s vaccination records on your phone is to store the actual vaccination information and supporting documents inside a dedicated digital pet record rather than relying on screenshots, email attachments or random photos.

Because apparently the universal system for pet records became:

“I know I took a picture of it.”

That is not a system.

Your animal may need vaccination information for daycare, boarding, grooming, travel, training, events or a new veterinary clinic.

And somehow the document is always needed precisely when you are not sitting beside the filing cabinet.

What should you store?

Keep:

  • vaccine name
  • vaccination date
  • expiry or renewal date where applicable
  • veterinarian or clinic
  • supporting certificate
  • animal the vaccine belongs to
  • relevant identification information

If you have multiple animals, this becomes even more important.

A camera roll containing seventeen veterinary documents with no obvious distinction between animals is not particularly useful at a daycare counter.

Screenshots are better than nothing

I am not anti-screenshot.

If the choice is between a screenshot and having absolutely no record, take the screenshot.

The issue is what happens next.

Documents should become structured information.

A vaccination record should be connected to:

this animal, this vaccine, this date and this document.

That makes it usable.

Sharing should not mean surrendering control

Pet parents should also be able to share relevant information without handing somebody every piece of information they have ever stored about the animal.

A groomer may need vaccination status.

A sitter may need medication instructions.

A veterinarian may need more complete medical information.

Different care relationships require different information.

That is normal.

Your phone should make accessing the record easier.

It should not turn your animal’s life into one enormous public profile.

Your pet already has a life history

We are just terrible at storing it.

Vaccines are one part.

Medications are another.

Microchip records are another.

Then there are licences, insurance records, care instructions, travel documents and all the things somebody learned about your animal six years ago that suddenly matter again today.

Putting vaccination records on your phone is useful.

Giving the animal an actual record is better.
